Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for response
   • Check equipment to ensure availability and serviceability
   • Obtain task and operational instructions
   • Confirm location details of incident
   • Select and use personal protective equipment
   • ntify local environment conditions
2. Respond to incident
   • Travel to incident location in a safe and efficient manner
   • Maintain communication with base station and other personnel at all times
   • Carry out on site search activities as necessary
3. Rescue is effected
   • Assess and monitor incident scene for hazards and appropriateness of planned procedures
   • Modify planned procedures where necessary in response to local circumstances
   • Provide support to other rescue services as appropriate
   • Obtain access to casualties safely
   • Operate equipment safely and appropriately
   • Communicate the progress of the rescue to appropriate people
   • Treat and monitor casualties and move to safety
4. Implement post incident responses
   • Recover, clean and service equipment
   • Complete documentation
   • Report incidents

Performance Evidence

The candidate must be assessed on their ability to integrate and apply the performance requirements of this unit in a workplace setting. Performance must be demonstrated consistently over time and in a suitable range of contexts.

The candidate must provide evidence that they can:

investigate the circumstances and logistics for the emergency

carry out preparation and move to the rescue site

assess the situation and establish communication with additional or specialist help

carry out the required rescue or response to emergency

implement post incident responses

use industry standard terminology

apply workplace health and safety in the context of own work.

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of:

local environmental conditions

search and rescue methods

operation and characteristics of rescue equipment, tools and vehicles

environmental, public health and safety issues

types of hazards and how they should be handled

enterprise procedures, legislative and work health and safety requirements

first aid, life preservation.
